Choosing a material
Which materials are available on the NHS depends on the tooth and the NHS rules for your treatment. We'll always say which parts are NHS and which are private, and the cost, before we begin.
- Composite (white) fillings: shaded to match your tooth and bonded in place.
- Amalgam (metal) fillings: strong and long-established, mostly used on back teeth.
- Inlays: a filling made outside the mouth from porcelain or resin, then cemented in. Useful when a cavity is too big for an ordinary filling.
Looking after a filled tooth
Fillings last longer when the tooth around them stays healthy. Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between teeth and keeping sugary snacks to mealtimes all help. We'll check your fillings at every check-up.
NHS or private?
Fillings are available on the NHS. Some materials or tooth positions may be private: we'll tell you before we start. Your dentist will always explain the options and give you a written estimate before treatment starts. How NHS charges and private fees work.
Questions people ask
Will I need an injection?
Usually, yes, so you don't feel the work. If you're nervous about injections, tell us: we can use numbing gel first and go at your pace.
How soon can I eat?
With a white filling you can eat once the numbness has worn off. We'll give you advice for your own filling.
