NHS, private and Denplan: fees explained

Whether you're NHS, private or on Denplan, you'll get a written estimate before any treatment. Here's how each option works and where to find the current NHS charges.

NHS

NHS dental costs, explained simply

Free

is what an NHS check-up costs. Examinations are free for everyone in Scotland.

80%

is your share of the NHS fee for any treatment, unless you don't pay NHS charges.

£384

is the most a single course of NHS treatment can cost you.

Who gets free NHS dental treatment

  • Everyone aged under 26
  • People who are pregnant or have given birth in the last 12 months
  • People with a certificate of exemption from patient charges because of their income or because they receive certain benefits

Don't pay NHS charges? Let us know when you book and bring your proof along. On a low income? The NHS Low Income Scheme (form HC1) may help with costs.

The current NHS charges

The Scottish Government sets NHS charges and updates them from time to time. For the current figures, see the official NHS inform page.

Your options

NHS, private or Denplan: which is right for me?

At Boclair Dental Care you can choose NHS care, private care, or a Denplan plan, and mix NHS and private for different treatments.

NHS

The care your mouth needs, at a fixed NHS charge. Boclair is an NHS-committed practice.

How you pay
Your examination is free. Treatment costs 80% of the NHS fee, capped at £384 per course, unless you don't pay NHS charges.
What it covers
Everything clinically necessary: check-ups, X-rays, hygiene when needed, fillings, root fillings, extractions, crowns, bridges and dentures.
Who it suits
Families, under-26s (free), and anyone who wants straightforward NHS dentistry.

Private, pay as you goTo confirm

Choose private materials or treatments for any item, and pay as you go.

How you pay
You'll have a written estimate before treatment, then pay for each item when it's done.
What it covers
Any treatment we offer, including dental implants, all-ceramic crowns, whitening and facial aesthetics consultations.
Who it suits
Patients who'd like a specific option, such as a tooth-coloured material, for one treatment or more.

To confirm: Would you like to publish a private fee guide ("from" prices)? We'll add one once you supply the figures.

DenplanTo confirm

Spread the cost of private care with a monthly Denplan payment.

How you pay
A monthly Direct Debit, at a level that depends on the plan and your mouth.
What it covers
Varies by plan: regular check-ups and hygienist visits are typical, and some plans cover routine treatment.
Who it suits
Patients who prefer private care and want predictable monthly budgeting.

To confirm: Which Denplan plans do you offer (e.g. Denplan Care, Denplan Essentials), at which practice, and at what monthly fee band? We'll only state what you confirm.

Spreading the cost

Finance options are available for some private treatment. Ask us for details.

To confirm: Who is your finance provider, and are you an FCA-authorised credit broker or an appointed representative? We won't publish finance details until this is confirmed and the wording is approved.

Questions about fees

How do I know if I'm exempt from NHS charges?

Under-26s and people who are pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months get free NHS treatment, as do people with an exemption because of their income or benefits. NHS inform has the full rules; please bring proof to your appointment.

Does Denplan cover everything?

Denplan plans cover different things depending on the plan. We'll explain what your plan includes before you join.

Can I get a written estimate?

Always. You'll have the cost in writing before any treatment starts, NHS or private.
