Options for missing teeth
There's usually more than one way to replace a tooth. We'll explain each for your mouth:
- A single implant with a crown: doesn't involve the neighbouring teeth.
- An implant bridge: two or more implants supporting several teeth.
- An implant-retained denture: a denture that clips onto implants for extra hold.
- Alternatives: a conventional bridge or a denture, often available on the NHS.
Who implants suit
Implants need healthy gums, enough bone to hold them, and good cleaning at home for the long term. Smoking, gum disease and some medical conditions increase the risk of problems. We'll assess all of this, usually with X-rays or a scan, and give you a written estimate before you commit.
Your dentist
Dr Louise Shearin has a special interest in restorative dentistry and has recently completed a programme of study in dental implantology. She'll explain each stage, how long it takes, and who will carry it out.
What happens
Consultation
We discuss your options, examine your mouth and take X-rays.
Planning
If implants suit you, we plan the treatment and give you a written estimate.
Placement
The implant is placed under local anaesthetic and left to heal.
Your new tooth
Once healed, the crown, bridge or denture is fitted to the implant.
NHS or private?
Dental implants are private treatment. Your dentist will always explain the options and give you a written estimate before treatment starts. How NHS charges and private fees work.
To confirm: Does Dr Shearin place implants at Boclair, or restore implants placed by a visiting or referral surgeon? We'll describe the pathway exactly once you confirm.
Questions people ask
Can I get implants on the NHS?
No, implants are private in general dental practice. NHS alternatives, such as bridges and dentures, may be available.
Does it hurt?
Implant placement is done under local anaesthetic, so you shouldn't feel the procedure itself. You may be sore for a few days afterwards; we'll give you aftercare advice. If you're very anxious, ask us about sedation at our sister practice.
